(This post is from my old, old, super old site. My views have changed over the years, hopefully my writing has improved, and there is now more than a handful of folks reading my site. Enjoy.)

Ray Charles dies at 73.

Damnit. Ray is easily one of my favorite musicians out there, I honestly place him up there next to SRV and BB King. Suck. What a sad day. When I bought my iPod, the 5 cd set "Genius And Soul" was the very first thing I put on there.

I still remember the very first time I heard Ray- Saturday morning as a kid, getting up early to watch the cartoons. This was back before we had 24hr programming all the time.. I would turn on channel 5 (ksdk) and there would be the vertical colors, and then all of a sudden out of nowhere as 7:00 am hit (or was it 6am?) drums would come on and America The Beautiful would play with overlays of American flags and Ray singing at his keyboards. After that the cartoons would come on, but Ray always made sure my day started out right.

So here are some my favorite Ray Charles songs- listen to them now... I'll have to remove them after a while.

Genius was a good nickname for him. Farewell Ray, you'll be missed.
