Apache Derby download. This is a snapshot from Sept. 13th, which includes jar files so you don't have to build it yourself.

I think I might have an unhealthy obsession with embedded databases. Anyway.. this project looks like it's going to be pretty cool:

a) It's licensed under the BSD license so I can use it however I want and make some money.

b) From what I understand it's some pretty stable and feature complete- cloudscape/derby is fault tolerant, and even has row level locking. Super cool.

c) They're using Subversion for the source control. Die CVS die.
