(This post is from my old, old, super old site. My views have changed over the years, hopefully my writing has improved, and there is now more than a handful of folks reading my site. Enjoy.)

Bug ID# 4243208: Need a way to reference a specific message in Mail.app.

There is no way to reference a specific message in Mail.app, so that third party applications can open up and store references to messages. What would be ideal is to have a public pasteboard type that my app could register for, and pull some sort of id out of (on drag and drop) to use as a ref later on when talking to Mail.app, and to open up the specific mail message.

I get this request for VoodooPad all the time- folks want links to specific mail messages. While I'm sure there's a way to do it with spotlight files, I would prefer that there be a public api for this.
